Seismic shift in local San Diego radio

In a major realignment of local San Diego radio, iHeart stations 760-AM (KGB) and 1360-AM (XTRA Sports / KLSD) swapped dial positions today.

The new Sports San Diego 760 will feature sports talk in addition to carrying all San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztec football and basketball games. The sports crew gains a stronger signal during the evening as 760-AM pumps out 5000 watts vs 1360-AM’s 1000 watts. Both are 5000 during the day. New lineup is:

  • Big Rich, TD & Fletch (6am-9am)
  • The Herd with Colin Cowherd (9am-12pm)
  • Darren Smith and Marty (12-3pm)
  • Jon & Jim (3-6pm)
  • FOX Sports Radio (6pm-6am)

(The ghost of Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton lingers.)

1360-AM is being rebranded as The Patriot 1360 (KLSD) and will offer syndicated conservative talk shows as follows:

  • America In The Morning (4-6am)
  • The Glenn Beck Program (6-9am)
  • The Chad Benson Show (9am-12pm)
  • The Dana Show (12-3pm)
  • The Jesse Kelly Show (3-6pm)
  • The Mark Levin Show (6-10pm)
  • Red Eye Radio (10pm-4am).

Meanwhile, Mike Slater and Lou Penrose (formerly on 760 with separate shows) will be teaming up and moving over to flagship station, KOGO AM-600, to take over the late drive segment at 5 – 7pm as “Slater & Lou” while Carl DeMaio will continue to hold court in the 3 – 5pm slot. 760 morning host and long-time radio veteran, Mark Larson, will move to “fill-in” spots on KOGO. At writing, we think the KOGO lineup will be:

  • Morning news with Ted and LaDona Harvey – 5-9am
  • Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show – 9am-12pm
  • Sean Hannity – 12-3pm
  • Carl DeMaio – 3-5pm
  • Slater & Lou – 5-7pm
  • KOGO @ Night – 7-9pm

The changes clearly have the fingerprints of newly appointed iHeart San Diego regional media president, Nicole Ippolito, a 30-year veteran of the iHeart Radio Borg. Somewhat surprising is that the move was not telegraphed or pre-announced by iHeart. The bomb was dropped yesterday and everything swapped today. There is also speculation as to whether Mark Larson will accept fill-in roles or choose to do something else.
